The Passing of Raymond Arcand

Winnipeg The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) Chair,the Honourable Justice Murray Sinclair,Commissioner Chief Wilton Littlechild and Commissioner Marie Wilson,released the following statement on the passing of Raymond Arcand.
Our deepest condolences go to the family and friends of Raymond Arcand. He brought a perspective and understanding to his work with the TRC that will be missed by us all. Former IRS students, his family, friends, and community have lost a great champion,said Justice Murray Sinclair.
Mr. Arcand was appointed as a member of the TRC Survivor Committee in July 2009 by the Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, and served as a valuable voice for survivors in the Alberta region.
As a survivor of the Indian Residential Schools (IRS) system, Mr. Arcand dedicated his final years to helping other former students understand the often challenging processes that were established to assist former IRS students.
Mr. Arcand dedicated his entire life to the betterment of Aboriginal people and youth. He was the former Chief of the Alexander First Nation near Edmonton, and was involved in developing First Nations youth through sport. Mr. Arcand was also a 20-year veteran of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
